Washington Square Bar & Grill

1707 Powell (at Union)
San Francisco, CA 94133
433-1188
Website
The venerable (opened by Ed Moose in 1973) Washbag (as named by Herb Caen, frequently to be found there ingesting his Vitamin V, aka vodka martinis) has been resurrected by Liam Tiernan and Susan Tiernan, after its unfortunate brief rebranding as the Cobalt Tavern, which closed in January 2008. The place looks as timeless as it always did (polished wood, gleaming brass, white linen tablecloths, lots of framed memorabilia), and serves up traditional American comfort-food specialties, high and low (steaks, burgers, salads, pastas) to a horde of happy regulars. There's a rotating list of nightly piano players, and live jazz at Saturday and Sunday brunch. - Meredith Brody
