Scintillating turtle soup, definitive popcorn shrimp, fine rémoulade, and of course raw oysters and classic cocktails (Sazerac, Ramos Fizz) are good choices. The old-timey, clubby surroundings haven't surrendered a whit of their charm, and enthusiastic crowds still tax the service on the weekends.

The Inside Word on Elite Cafe

Once a former gin joint / underground gambling spot during the Prohibition era, Elite Cafe still maintains a bit of atmosphere from the era. The bar area's great, not unlike ancient places in New Orleans, and martinis are cold are proper. The culinary experience is an approximation of Southern-style comfort foods, and I've enjoyed my few meals there. My favorite dish thus far is their Maple Leaf Farms Duck Breast.
