Warming pots of yellow, red, green, and of course, chocolate-colored sauce are arrayed on tables among bright, creative art-altars at Mole to Die For, an annual cooking contest. It's impossible to know how many sauces you'll find when you climb the gallery's stairway to heaven, which is part of the fun. Ten? Twenty? Four? It's likewise unknowable whether sampling them all constitutes dinner — for a tiny person, the rich, complicated sauces could well ruin a normal meal, but for someone more robust, the spoonfuls of tangy delicacy may just be a perfect amuse-bouche. You are warned, San Francisco! Life is uncertain at the mole contest! We can say for sure, though, that cash prizes go to the top three vote-getters in the Professional Chef and Homemade Mole categories, and that last year, our favorite was number six. Also, "mole" has no accent; look it up before you complain to any of our writers, as someone did last year. Ask a Mexican! columnist Gustavo Arellano backed us up, and reiterated the mind-blowing qualities of mole, the "complex, multilayered terrestrial ambrosia."
